Holiday "Wrap UP"

Finish your shopping with us, specials each night from 6 to 8!

Well, we had a long day today, Saturday, Dec. 19th, but it was fun to enjoy the festive feeling of our customers as they enjoyed selecting special gifts for those on their lists.  We did a lot of peronsalization of ornaments today and hardly could keep up with our handpainted gift bags to package the purchases so they were sure to impress those who will be receiving them.  We  met many new people today and enjoyed hearing how happy they were to find a place in our area to buy unique hand made items.  One comment I enjoyed hearing is that ther isn't crowds and lines to contend with when patronizing small stores like ours.  Merry Christmas to everyone and we appreciate your support and your business.  It is our pleasure.

Now on Exhibit, Karen Heideler's Watercolors

Please stop by soon to see the wonderful watercolors created by Karen Heidler. They are so realistic that while I was working on this I kept thinking this image of her work looked like an actual photograph! Karen's work will be on display until the end of November. We will hold an artist reception so you can "Meet the Artist" in person on Oct 23rd (Friday) from 5 to 7pm. Please join us for this special event! Follow this link for directions http://www.spiritofthehand.com/store/WsPages.asp?ID=2

Karen Heidler has always had a love for art. She began drawing at a young age and was encouraged to keep at it. She graduated from Mount Vernon Nazarene University with a Bachelors in Fine Art and worked at a publishing company in the art department until she found a new, creative outlet: raising children!

A few years after beginning their family,
Karen began earnestly painting watercolors
and seeking avenues to display her art.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT
God created everyone in His own image. We are creative beings, some more than others. I found my creative niche when I took a watercolor class my senior year in college. It fit my personality: fast, precise, attention to detail, intense focus, follow-through. I love using watercolors to paint the exquisite beauty of flowers, the complexity of the human form in tender moments of life, and to place the beauty of God's creation on the walls of our homes. Artists who inspired me are Norman Rockwell, Andrew Wyeth, Käthe Kollwitz and Gustav Klimt. Just as they expressed themselves through their art so I create art as a refection of who God created me to be.

New Work just in, Soaprocks!

Bring wonder to daily life, transforming the most mundane of tasks into an inspiring daily reminder of nature's beauty. Unlike keepsakes, which are put up on a pedestal and soon forgotten, the beauty of each SoapRock is magnified in action! Under water, lighting up with brilliant natural color, their smooth stone-like texture will gently cleanse with a light lather, leaving your skin soft and refreshed.

About the Artist's Inspiration to Create this Product:

Question: HOW WAS THE PRODUCT INSPIRED?

Answer: While in the shower one cold February morning with just soap scraps to use for washing. The artist looked down at the object in her hand and saw a rock where pieces of soap used to be. There it began. Soap-Rock! SoapRocks! That light bulb moment and seven years of integrating herbs, oils, and wholesome ingredients changed the nature of bathing forever. She integrated her eclectic background in Conceptual Art, Geology, Cooking, Gardening, and a little Chemistry and created this beautiful product that is as beautiful as it is good for your skin.

t.s. pink makers of SoapRocks® soap bars, offering fine soap in the form and color of rocks and gems

Natural Ingredients:
Endowed with extracts of earth: Aloe, Calendula, Chamomile, Comfrey, Lavender, Vitamin E, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, Almond Oil. Thus you can experience a beauty that penetrates, yet is skin deep. Prepare yourself for a consummate washing experience. They are a hybrid dense glycerine soap that lifts very little oil off of the skin as they gently cleanse. They are the art that touches us intimately, teaching us to appreciate beauty by using it, and letting it go. What becomes a work of art? ..... you do!

Last Chance to see Rhonda Hancocks Work on Display until Sept. 30th.

I just thought I would post a reminder about stopping in if you are in the area to see Rhonda Hancock's wonderful work. It's on display until the end of September and then we will have our next artist installing their work. More on them soon, right now this is Rhonda's spotlight! Rhonda's watercolors look great in our store and her versitile choice of subjects is a topic of many conversations when visitors view her work. She has told me that she finds it a challenge to take on something new and figure out how to portray it in her medium. I have enjoyed getting to know her and her work over the past two months.

New Work this week at Spirit of the Hand Gallery

We are very excited to have our newest artists work now here! Actually, there is another box on the way, but so far we have these really terriffic clouds, pumpkins, a flamingo, penguin, smiling shark, and flowerpot. These are sure to make your day, they are bright, fun and very unique. Artist, T. Oliver Kopian, orginally a "neighbor" of ours from Ybor City (Tampa area) recently relocated to NY, but I still remember stumbling upon his studio and thinking it was such a great place and I can't imagine how much fun it must be to come up with these crazy creatures.

A bit about these artist and his work:

Each piece is painstakingly hand crafted from start to finish in a unique patented process known as Rubber Plush®.

The finished product is a cross between paper mache, molded rubber and a stuffed animal. All aspects of the process are done by hand... from the original sculpting and molding, to hand stuffing, and ultimately airbrush and detail painting. All pieces are signed and dated, and limited editions are also numbered.

We have pink & blue clouds...Oh and there is a gray one! I thought it was too funny not to add to the display.

A comment by a customer as we were hanging up these interesting little creatures..."Perfect for a baby's room!" These creatures will bring out the kid in you when you see them, there definately is no age limit for enjoying. This type of art knows no bounds when it comes to delighting the heart and tickling the funnybone! Visit us soon to see for these creatures for yourself!

Keep in mind as holiday gift buying approaches...

This holiday season purchase 3 more American made holiday gifts from a local shop or gallery. You can save Main Street, small local businesses and our creative communities! When you shop at a national chain or big box dollars are transferred our of the community in just a few hours. When you shop local 68 cents of every dollar get recycled back into your community. Buy American made and every penny of every dollar stays right here! Fixing our economy is up to each of us think about the impact you can make by pledging to do this and encouraging your friends to do so as well. We are not saying to boycott big box stores a & chain retailers. But, if you take the time to look at what your local businesses have to offer and can also do some of your purchasing there it will make a big difference in your local economy, local job market and the overall American economy. I borrowed this from http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=282844230312&ref=mf & this terrific principal's creator is Cinda Baxter read about this on http://www.the350project.net/home.html

Labor Day's Meaning

Labor Day:
A tribute to American Workers & fair working conditions.

Keep the jobs in the US and help our country become stronger and prosper. A friend of mine who is a history teacher reminded me about the meaning behind today, and I think it's a good thing to be reminded of...every day.

Why we've setup a Blogspot, Twitter, & Facebook page for the gallery?

Word of mouth has become our best way of getting our future customers to find us. We have tried ads in many different publications in our local area. I think most are getting so much mail in the newspaper and mailbox that they don't have a chance to look at it all and it goes in the circular file many times. I have just returned from a show in Philadelphia where I acquired new artists work and ordered new designs from artists we already represent in our gallery. I took a seminar of social networking and found I was on track as I had just set up a Facebook page a little over a week before I flew to Philly. But, I learnd so much as well that will help to stay in contact and also offer a bit of what goes on in our gallery behind the scenes. There are so many ways to find what you want on the web, and I find more and more are spending a lot of time obtaining information and things they need in this way. Nothing replaces the quality of holding a great newspaper or magazine's articles & offerings that you can hold on to and refer back to anytime you want to pull it out and look at it again. But in our busy lives I think there is more and more of a trend that people are turning to ways to seek the information they want to receive catering to their specific interests and needs. Staying in touch with what is going on targeting what is important to the individual is what makes subscribing to feeds on Twitter, Facebook, and so on. One has the freedom to recieve information and stay up to date with whatever they want to know about, and unsubscribe if their interests change and have it all taylored to their interests and needs.

I am just getting this all setup, but I will be posting information about what is going on in our gallery and anything I think may be of interest about American made products, the American Craft industry, artist news and more. Please subscribe to my blog and stay in touch with what goes on in Spirit of the Hand's world.

Establishing a blog for Spirit of the Hand

Well, it took a bit of time, but after getting hooked on Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends I ended up setting up a page for the gallery and it's been really fun to have a place to post what is going on in the Gallery, what's new, things going on that are related to the Art/Craft community...so, now I am learning about blogs, & tweets and also Flickr for photo storage. It seemed more overwhelming in the beginning but it is finally making more sense how they all connect and so I will be using this to keep informative updates and a journal of the happenings in the gallery and a bit of Nanette Orijinels (my designs) to share with anyone who would like to know more about what goes on behind the scenes.

Sign up to follow me and I will keep you updated with events and what is going on.

Look for me to do more updates as I set this all up!

Hope you are having an enjoyable summer!
